and john kerry hit on this last week. he said, "there's a new isolationism in america," and basically, with this attitude, "we are beginning to behave like a poor nation." norm, help us understand the main reason for involvement. is this about supporting ukraine's independence or is this really about sending a message to putin, that his actions are not acceptable? >> i think it's both, abby. and you know, we do have an interest in making sure that there's self-government and that regimes are not taken over by outside thugs. but you know, this is a case where, unlike vietnam, there is a domino effect. and if we just let this go without some sort of punishment for putin, then we're going to see similar things happen in the baltics, where there is substantial russian-speaking populations, and we're going to get some intimidation on other countries as well. this has implications that go beyond ukraine, but of course, ukraine also has implications that go beyond georgia or moldova. it's a bigger, richer, more important country
